Insurgent by Veronica Roth
One choice can transform you—or it can destroy you. But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves—and herself—while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.
Tris’s initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable horrors. War now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. And in times of war, sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge, and choices will become even more irrevocable—and even more powerful. Transformed by her own decisions but also by haunting grief and guilt, radical new discoveries, and shifting relationships, Tris must fully embrace her Divergence, even if she does not know what she may lose by doing so. 1
Faction transfers and initiates from their original factions must fight to be ranked high. Tris is trying to prove herself, as well as to others that she deserves to be in the faction. For those who do not rank high enough, they could become factionless. To be someone without a faction is thought to be someone without purpose. A lonely wanderer forced to fend for themselves in the rundown streets.
As secrets are revealed and plans of war effect all factions, Tris still struggles with finding her place. There is a saying of Faction before blood, but there are those who are willing to disobey this to fight for what they want. Tris must determine who is doing what is best for the faction, and who is doing what is best for themselves. Lies and broken promises run rampade in war. Some will choose the side that most benefits them for the time.
The bond that Tris has made with Tobias is tested frequently with all the chaos that surrounds them. New alliances are forming and their way of life is crumbling.
Here is a quote from Insurgent that I really liked.
page 341 ” I read somewhere…that crying defies scientific explanation. Tears are only meant to lubricate the eyes. There is no real reason for tear glands to overproduce tears at the behest of emotion. I think we cry to release the animal parts of us without losing our humanity. Because inside me is a beast that snarls, and growls, and strains toward freedom, toward Tobias, and above all, towards life. And as hard as I try, I cannot kill it. So I sob into my hands instead.”
It is difficult to describe these books, as so many things can give away details. Tris lives in a world that remembers the destruction of previous generations. It is up to them to rebuild and ensure that this does not happen again, but can human nature be controlled? Mind control simulations and weapons are the present, and the world is always hanging by a thread.
There is one part of the book that I burst out laughing, and it makes me laugh every time I think about it. Unfortunately it is something too long to describe and you would have to experience it as a reader of the series. For those of you with the books or are reading them, I am referencing page 65 of Insurgent. It starts about a 1/4 down the page. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
If you liked that, I also like the top of page 69.
I continue to enjoy the series and it is hard to guess what will happen next. I recommend that you check out this trilogy as well. The only problem is that Insurgent leaves you with a lot of things to clean up, and a cliff hanger amid the chaos! If you haven’t started the series yet and are interested, perhaps take some time before picking them up, or you will have to wait until next year for the finale.
While reading the acknowledgements at the end of Insurgent, there are thanks to Summit. As you may know, Summit is a production company that has started to pick up many great book series to have the right to make the films. There are so many in production and soon coming out, and even more that have not even begun casting. The Divergent trilogy is one of those series. I do not know the status of the films just yet, and these details constantly change. So far they are set to be released in 2015, and as it is a trilogy there will be sequels to follow. Yet another book to film series I will eagerly follow…year…after….year…..waiting…..ever so impatiently.
