Hansel And Gretel: Witch Hunters

The concept of this movie is it’s main selling feature.  Everyone knows about the classic tale of Hansel & Gretel, but nobody knows what happened to them after they killed the witch.  This film creates a future for these two classic fairy tale characters and turns them into witch hunters.

The film stars Jeremy Renner as Hansel and Gemma Arterton as Gretel.  There are quite a number of witches in this film, but the grand high dark witch is played by Famke Janssen.  The film begins with the classic retelling of the two children and the house made of candy.  After they kill the witch the film jumps ahead about 10 years to when they are older.  They are bounty hunters and witch killers.  Towns are plagued by witches taking their children, and Hansel and Gretel are hired to hunt them down and kill them.  Many children begin to disappear from the town of Oxford and it seems to have to do with the upcoming Blood Moon.  The Blood Moon is a very powerful night for witches and if they use the heart of a white witch for a spell on this night it would make the witches able to withstand fire, their elemental enemy.

When I heard about the concept of this film, I was pretty excited.  However, when I saw a preview for it, I worried that they would rely on comedy too much and ruin the movie.  Thankfully this was not so, or else I just found so little of it funny that I didn’t notice any failed attempts.  I really liked the portrayal of a lot of the witches.  Witches are known for being ugly with their warts and pointed hats.  Many of them even with green skin.  I’m not sure if this is a Wizard of Oz reference or if this was started well before.  There are many variations of the witches in this movie, each more ugly than the rest.

I didn’t love this movie, but to be honest I didn’t dislike it as much as I was expecting.  There were many interesting ideas for the film, but it was nothing great.  This is one of those movies that you check out on Netflix if you have some time to kill, not theatres.  If your looking for a movie that will inspire you or create some lasting impression, this is not the movie for you.  This is just a fun time killer with some creepy witches, nothing to be watched more than once.
