The Number 23

The Number 23 is a psychological thriller starring Jim Carrey. Carrey plays a Animal Control Officer named Walter Sparrow. After a series of strange events, Walters wife comes across a book called The a Number 23 by Topsy Krets. While reading the book, Walter becomes obsessed. The story has too many similarities with his life and it begins to haunt him. The book refers to the 23 Enigma, which is a belief that most events (usually bad) can be connected to the number 23. Some examples of this are:

William Shakespeare was born on April 23, 1564.
William Shakespeare died on April 23, 1616.
Julius Caesar was stabbed 23 times when he was assassinated.
The ancient Egyptian and Sumerian calendars begin on July 23.
The Knights Templar had 23 Grand Masters.
The Mayans believed the world will end on Dec 23, 2012 (20 + 1 + 2 = 23)
The Titanic sank the morning of April 15th, 1912 (4 + 1 + 5 + 1 + 9 + 1 + 2 = 23)

The film takes on some animation while playing out scenes from the novel which was done very well. Even in the live action scenes, played out by characters from the film, there is an animated feel to it.

Jim Carrey is known for his comedy roles and although I would not say he was very memorable in this thriller, the film was very entertaining. The theory behind the 23 Enigma could be considered interesting, but to me the theory is just subjective. Anyone could tailor the theory to any number and come up with a number. Example: today is Sunday May 11, 2014 and my name is Chris. S 19+ U 21 + N 14 + D 4 + A 1 + Y 25 = 84 – C 3 – H 8 – R 18 – I 9 -S 19 = 27 – 5 (May) – 2 – 0 – 14 = 6. Which is the exact number I would probably rate this movie out of 10. Spooky.
