The Maze Runner is based on a book series of the same name by James Dashner.  The series has popped up on my radar off and on for quite some time.  My reading list is never ending so I wasn’t able to get to these books before seeing the movie.  Needless to say, I need to get on reading these!

A young man wakes up within an elevator cage racing upwards.  Once the cage reaches the top, a door is opened and light pours in revealing a group of young men staring down at him.  Like those before him he cannot remember anything.  Your name is the only memory that comes back to you within time.  The young man is Thomas, played by Dylan O’Brien.  Thomas has been transported to what is known as the Glade.  Surrounded by massive towering walls, the Glade is a green square in the centre of a maze.  No one knows who put them there or why.  They have Runners who search the maze, trying to map it out to find a way.  The walls to the maze in the Glade close every night and the walls shift within.  No one has ever survived a night in the maze due to creatures known as Grievers.  Since Thomas’ arrival things have been changing and now more than ever the group needs to escape from the maze.

The Maze Runner is the first book in a series of 4 which was released back in 2009.  Each book was released consecutively until 2012. The Maze Runner, The Scorch Trial, The Death Cure, The Kill Order.  A fifth book has also been announced called The Fever Code to be released in 2016.  Although there are going to be 5 books in the series, The Kill Order and The Fever Code are prequels to The Maze Runner.  The Death Cure is the final book in the original plot line and we may be in luck for being able to see it on the big screen. The Scorch Trial film is set to be released in September of this year.

For fans of The Hunger Games, you would love The Maze Runner.  Picture the games themselves with the outward storyline being a mystery.  Although I am disappointed I never had the chance to read the book beforehand, it made watching the movie all the more exciting for me.  I had no idea what was going to happen and there were many thrilling scenes.  I am actually really surprised that I have not heard more praise for this movie before, which is why I am telling you that you SHOULD see this movie.
