“This is not a test. This is your Emergency Broadcast System announcing the commencement of the Annual Purge sanctioned by the U.S. Government. Weapons of class 4 and lower have been authorized for use during the Purge. All other weapons are restricted. Government officials of ranking 10 have been granted immunity from the Purge and shall not be harmed. Commencing at the siren, any and all crime, including murder, will be legal for 12 continuous hours. Police, fire, and emergency medical services will be unavailable until tomorrow morning at 7 a.m., when The Purge concludes. Blessed be our New Founding Fathers and America, a nation reborn. May God be with you all.”

Emergency Broadcast System announcing the commencement of The Purge

The Purge: Anarchy is the second film in the series but I believe they are stand along films.  I have not seen the first film, but had heard of it and the second film caught my eye more.  The above is the national broadcast given for the yearly purge.  There are sirens and notices post everywhere, but once the time commences it becomes chaos.  Many people lock down for the night, but others flock to the streets.  Some for vengeance, others for money.  The elite do not run out into the streets but have people who offer themselves in return for large sums of money for their families.  There are also those who get paid to collect those out during the purge for the elites to bid on.

The film follows a group of strangers.  The group is stranded outside during the purge against their will, but the leader of the group and the one who rescues them is outside in order to purge.

The whole concept is rather morbid and disturbing, but there is a realness to the film that makes you actually consider the possibility of it.

The film relies on the blood and gore of the situation and there is a lot of action involved.  I admit my heart was racing for much of the film, thinking about what I would do in those situations.  Despite the fact that you board up your doors and windows, this does not make you immune to others trying to get in.

There is a third film set to come out in 2016 that builds on the events of Anarchy to tie the films together.  I would consider watching the first film to see if it has any connection to the second.  The Purge: Anarchy is for action horror fans.  Those who are completely against the above mentioned, do not attempt to watch.
